Breaking Through Barriers (BTB) is a program that provides various workshops to equip underrepresented students with vital skills for their academic, professional, and personal growth. Participation in the program is designed for rising sophomores through seniors nominated by peers, staff, or faculty. Freshman students are also welcome to join and take advantage of the opportunities the program has to offer. To join, email Maya Younes

GOALS

Education: provide students with resources necessary to seek opportunities for volunteerism, research the job market, apply to graduate and professional school, and connect with alumni in their field. BTB has KAPLAN Test Preparation books for the GRE, LSAT, and MCAT that students are encouraged to use to prepare for taking those exams.

Career development: includes but is not limited to helping students obtain internships and full time jobs post-graduation. BTB has developed connections with recruiters and employers, locally and regionally, who seek to diversify their employment candidate pool.

Skill development: each workshop is designed to provide students with vital job survival skills. Additionally, BTB members are required to meet individually with the program coordinator to assess their progress in locating and applying for internships and other opportunities such as study abroad.

NEW initiative: Stand and Deliver, a public speaking program, will run for six weeks during the spring 2013 semester. There is no instructor at a Stand and Deliver meeting, but rather members evaluate one another’s presentations. The topic selected for each meeting will be based on extemporaneous and interpretive speaking styles. Stand and Deliver is only open to BTB members.
