Kimchi on the Move: Diaspora, Media, Identity

The Cultural Text of Koreanness: This lecture analyzes Kimchi as a complex cultural text mediating modern Korean identity. The presentation traces its evolution from a regional staple to an emblem of Korean soft power. The discussion centers on the diaspora experience, exploring how Kimchi serves as a cultural anchor—adapted with local ingredients abroad, yet historically a marker of discrimination. Analysis utilizes contemporary media, including Korean-American picture books, K-dramas, and Hallyu animation, to dissect Kimchi's role in constructing a dynamic, globalized Korean identity.

Post-Lecture Tasting: Join us afterward to sample diverse Kimchi varieties available in the Midwestern United States.
